This depends on the type of Visa you have. For some Visas like the 457 Sponsorship Visa, health insurance is compulsory. You will need to attach a copy of your health cover when you apply for your visa. You have a number of options to choose from and the monthly cover normally starts from $65.00 AUD onwards.

If you are migrating to Australia as a Student – you will need to take out Overseas Student Healthcare (OSHC) as a compulsory requirement. Of course, this will all be clearly outlined when applying for your visa so you can make an informed decision.

If you’re unsure then we recommend you connect with one of our Partners to get a free no obligation quote.

Should You Get Private Health Insurance?

When people ask the question of do I need private health care? We generally respond by asking “Will you be able to cover the expensive medical bills if you need them?”. Like most Private healthcare is more for peace of mind and to avoid being out of pocket if you ever fall sick. Along with this there are a huge number of added benefits on top like –

                • > Shorter Waiting Periods
                • > You can select the surgeon
                • > Spreading the cost throughout the year
                • > Choice of the hospital you use

What If I Don’t Take Out Private Health Insurance?

The good news is Medicare provides access to most medical services like Doctors and hospitals. This is similar to setup to the UK and surrounding countries.

You will need to get your Medicare card when you arrive, you can do this by attending one of the local service Centre’s. It’s recommended to get their early as they are always busy. You will need to provide Poof of Visa and address, so make sure you take this along with your passport.

Once setup you can then benefit from Bulk Billing.

Bulk billing is when your doctor, surgeon or whichever specialist you see accepts the Medicare benefit. This means you can claim back a proportion of the bill, the good news is you can provide your Bank details and they will pay this directly into your account.

You can access the required Medicare forms here – https://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/forms/3101

How Much does it cost for Health Insurance?

Premiums will vary greatly depending on your level of cover and the provider you choose,

You must ensure that the Health Insurance policy you take out covers everything you need it to. From our experience Private health care can be anything from $65.00Aud per month which is a basic cover. To amounts over $300.00Aud for more comprehensive cover.

The good news is you can arrange a Free no obligation quote with one of the partners we work with.
